Event Description

Detective Stark from the Newport Beach Police has spoken with the WBC people in Kansas to confirm the time they will actually be there. They have stated they are planning on being there from 2pm-3pm on the northwest corner of Jamboree and East Bluff. Detective Stark has asked that we only be there as long as this group is there, and that our best opposing position would be to set up on the south east corner of the
Come out in support of ALL Youth who suffer due to homophobic bullying. The "God Hates Fags" people are planning to protest the CDM High School production of Rent. Let's stop the haters from hurling their own shame on our children and on our future.

This is the same group that tried to disrupt the funerals of gay service personnel. Please come show your support for RENT and LGBT rights.

For more about this story and the ACLU lawsuit that is arguing that there is an atmosphere of intolerance at CDM High School, see this LA times story. The ACLU lawsuit "focuses on the aftermath of a Facebook video posted in January in which three Corona del Mar football players threatened to rape and kill a female classmate and used slurs to describe homosexuals." The lawsuit states that "School and district officials, through their action and inaction, have not only failed to take steps to address this hostile environment, but they have contributed to it and given sanction to it."

This beautiful short film, Alone, together, stunningly portrays the violence and pain that results from homophobia and hate-speech.

Please come out on Friday, April 24, and help take a stand against intolerance and in support of the CDM students who, gay, lesbian and straight, are also taking a stand for what is right.

So we should meet at the southeast corner of Jamboree and Eastbluff at 1:30 pm? I'm always more comfortable when I know where I'm supposed to be! Now if I can just figure out which corner is southeast....

Not that it matters for how egregious the actions of the Westborough Baptist Church are, but I just want to clarify that they do not differentiate between gay and straight servicemen when protesting their funerals. The Fred Phelps crew protested the funerals of various soldiers on the premise that the military is fighting on behalf of a country that condones homosexuality.

I'm changing my "maybe" to a YES! I can definitely come at 2:30 pm and stay as long as necessary. The people planning to protest the students and the play horrify me--I'd be ashamed of myself for not being there to support the students and families. Thank you for letting us know about this.
